Continuing with our weekly look at The Promised Neverland, this week, we tackle episode five, which I found to be a big tension builder as guesses become truths and a discovery that shakes our five master planners to their core is revealed, but at what cost? This episode pushes us farther down that rabbit hole and raises some big questions.
The focus this week shifts, away from Emma as a single entity and groups towards Norman and Ray, as we learn more about Ray specifically and what he knows or has known. This shakes up a big trust issue I sense as the series goes on, but we shall see. The other major focus this week was a discovery that, while it makes sense, it puts our two newest lead characters into a potential pickle.
With this report, I wanted to bring up the writing and how it pushes this mystery deeper. For me, how something is written changes its impact as much as voice acting, and this show does it pretty well. It is vague enough that it still hides some bigger plot secrets but gives the viewer enough information to help theorize a potential outcome to some of the bigger plot points.
I have to say my favorite part of this episode was a big reveal at the start, as the prior episode left off at the start of this scene and to see how it played out took me by surprise, as I did not suspect this character for that type of role, nor that motivation.
As a whole, episode five of The Promised Neverland took a shocking route and only added more to the mystery surrounding the character’s situation. As to the ending, We shall see where that leads to in the next episode.
