Episode 8 builds upon the previously established reputation that Naofumi got, as a miracle savior. It does so wonderfully. I was wrong in my last review. The episode was definitely not another low action, slice-of-life episode, but was quite a cool and amazing action-packed episode that even gives us some insight into what we, so far, saw both in the intro as well as when he was about to lose Raphtalia due to Myne interfering in his duel with Spear Hero.
Naofumi, Raphtalia, and Filo go to a village with a disease that has spread and is killing many villagers, including the chief. Due to his reputation, he is tasked with saving them, which takes the party to the main conflict of the episode – a fight with a dragon. That would, by itself, usually be badass enough, but this encounter with a zombie dragon was even more badass than that. The reason for that is that there is a real sense of danger for the main characters and, for a second, it’s uncertain if they will even win the fight. But then we get to see in greater detail something we have, so far, only gotten a glimpse of and that is the Curse Series, specifically, the Rage Shield, which is awesome. It’s basically an evil fiery shield that is capable of not only defending but also burning anyone who attacks, so it lets Naofumi directly inflict damage on the enemies. Unfortunately, it also makes him possessed and evil or something, which is less than ideal.
The episode was one of the best so far and I’m very glad I was wrong about what the nature of it would be in my previous review. I can’t wait to see where this goes and I certainly do look forward to seeing more of Curse Series and a deeper explanation of it. See you in the next episode!
