Code of Princess is a straight to PC emulated port of the popular DS title brought to us through Degica. I had my worries at first, it being from the handheld genre and coming to a bigger platform, but I can say I am pleasantly surprised and impressed by the game as a whole.

The story starts in a world with two existing races of man and monster, both co-existing peacefully. Over a couple of centuries, turmoil rises and monsters are attacking man and the Queen Distiny, along with her forces, invade the Kingdom of DeLuxia for the DeLuxcalibur. From there, you start off as Princess Solange Blanchefleur de Lux who takes the sword out of the Kingdom for safety and encounters a cast of very colorful characters who join in her crusade to save all of mankind. The storyline is shorter than what I thought it would be, but it was driven with Japanese voice acting that’s fun and fits the characters, bonus quest lines to give more backstory to the main campaign, unlockable content such as extra characters and challenges to play, and an environment that is beautifully designed with a great soundtrack to tag along to it. I had a lot of fun testing out each of the main characters in the campaign mode. The character designs are extremely charming as is their personalities and interactions.

There is much to say for Code of Princess‘s gameplay. On one hand, you have a pretty solidly built platform with combos that are decently easy to get the hang of, but on the other hand, it takes a bit of practice and time to get used to the battle system. Each level is based on mission to mission so it’s not a free exploration setting. However, its fun beat ’em up style keeps a good pace. With the side-scrolling style of this game, you are able to hop in between planes to chase after enemies or give yourself a bit of a reprieve in boss fights, but very rarely did I find myself doing it. Each character you pick has their own playstyle and abilities which you can fine tune the stats further with items, each with their own bonuses and even additional attributes such as healing when you burst or increasing your physical defense when bursted.

The leveling system in the game is very close to most action rpg games out there, allowing you to put experience points into different stats and build characters able to take on more difficult opponents in the game. Although the game can be a bit grindy with that aspect, it still carries enough weight on its own to have plenty of replayability in its levels. Also, I have to give kudos to the publishing team for giving different viewable formats, with and without the bottom screen that would be for the DS, allowing a cleaner layout personalized to your play style.

Along with the campaign, there are 3 other game modes to take advantage of: Free Play, Bonus Quests, and Co-Op/Versus. With Free Play, you can go back to any mission you’ve already done, with any character, to level them up and acquire more gold and/or items. Bonus Quests mode puts up challenges to compete such as defeating enemies in a certain time frame or defeating a high difficulty boss fight. And the final mode is the Co-Op/Versus mode which allows you to play with, or against, up to 3 other people online through steam. It’s a fun little mode where you can test builds and progress further with friends but there can be some issues. If you are playing with other people and their connection isn’t quite strong or stable enough to handle it, it will lag the level out regardless of who is hosting the room for it.

I have to say I was impressed with this DS port and I had a ton of fun playing and reviewing this game. I’m hoping that from this we see more games from the DS coming online to online stores such as steam. Would I recommend this to people who enjoy Action JRPG games? Absolutely. This is definitely a very solid JRPG to play that gave me quite a bit of variety as well as the ability to enjoy it with friends. You can catch Code of Princess out now on steam for $14.99.
