In DreadOut: Keepers of the Dark you follow a white light into a hotel type of environment, with multiple doors you can go into and figure out what’s going on behind each door. But before you start, you spawn in darkness with only flashbacks of your friends, showing you what the first game was about. The first room I entered is room 108, where is seems like it’s a schoolroom where you have find pieces of a Gramophone to finish the level and move onto the next room. In room 108 you have a doll that follows you that is, I am assuming, the ghost of a child. The game definitely has a really creepy atmosphere. One thing I learned early on is each room has pieces of pictures that help solve the puzzles in other rooms. And of what I can see, the pictures help spawn bosses in each room.

As you go through each area you, hear creepy noises. I do like the boss battles, because in order to defeat the bosses you have to use your cellphone camera and aim it at the weak spot. In the main room of the hotel, there is a janitor that gives out hints on where and what to do. Now we enter room 101, which at first glance looks like a castle. One of the enemies in this area are floating heads that, at first, will not attack you. But if you startle the head, it will chase you. The next enemy in this room is what looks like to be a pregnant ghost. The boss in the room seems to be a Medusa. After each boss you fight, it shows a cut scene which unveils the story.

The next room we go into is 102, which seems to be a village of some sort. The the only enemies you come across in room 102 are a ghost horse with a lady on it, trying to run you over. Room 102 seemed to be really short, once you take out the horse you are finished with it. We are going to skip ahead a little bit to room 105, as in neither room 103, nor in room 104, did I seem to find a boss, just some pictures for other rooms. Room 105 seems to similar to 102, except there are more dead bodies, and ton of rats eating corpses, with bugs infesting everything. What’s cool is you will know when there is a collectable or monster in the area, because if there is a collectible the screen will glow blue. If there is a monster, it will glow red and you will hear noises. I think it’s funny that in room 105 there is a child that wants you to play hide and seek with her to find a collectible.

I will leave you all with this; it seems to me that the entire game is really repetitive as you go from room to room looking for collectibles, while trying to solve the mystery and fighting a boss which then gives you information on how that boss became a ghost. Even though many people in the discussions say there are a ton of jump scares, from what I have seen playing is I haven’t come across very many jump scares, unless you’re meant to run all over the place and not take your time. Then I can see why there may be a lot of jump scares.

Pros
- Good, spooky, atmosphere
- You have a choice between a camera and cell phone for taking pictures
- Lots of exploring
Cons
- It is really repetitive, as in same stuff in each room just different enemies
- There is a monster that just pops up and kills you with no way to kill them
- Having to jump from 1 room to the other in order to complete first room
I have to say I liked the game, and I recommend it to people who like the horror genre.
