My Hero Academia: Two Heroes Anime movie review

Studio: BONES
Publisher: Funimation
Release Date: September 25th, 2018

When I first began watching My Hero Academia, it was soon after Food Wars the Third Plate – Tohtsuki Train Arc stopped airing weekly. I needed something shounen-like to keep my interest like Food Wars, but nothing else airing would tickle that fancy. So, I bit the bullet and tried the first episode. I never imagined that I would enjoy the show as much as I did. I ended up marathoning an entire 49 episodes in the three days before the 50th episode and have been watching weekly ever since. So, when I had the opportunity to view the movie My Hero Academia: Two Heroes before official release, the fanboy inside yelled at the top of his lungs and immediately contacted Funimation to watch it. Many thanks to Funimation for the digital screener.

My Hero Academia: Two Heroes takes place sometime before the training camp arc in the third season, during Class A’s summer vacation. All Might receives an invitation to a quirk exhibition on a manmade island called I-Island and invites Midoriya as his plus [ultra] one to the event. (The exposition is aptly named ‘I-Expo’, as well.) On the island, Midoriya meets the daughter of All Might’s former partner in America, Melissa. However, not all is going according to plan on the island… and I’m not going to spoil this glorious viewing pleasure for you, either.

The beginning of the movie starts out in America with new American heroes and villains. The animation is awesome and packs a punch with a young All Might passing through and chasing after the villains. It’s absolutely breathtaking to see All Might in his prime in America delivering his iconic USA-themed Smashes. The beautiful thing about the start of the movie is that it also uses the iconic features of the animated show and recaps. For those new to the series, it’s easy to get in to it; for those already deep into the series, it’s short and too the point and very emotional.

The storytelling is fast-paced, yet well told. The action is classic My Hero Academia fashion, in my humble opinion. The action, the direction, the animation sequences, and everything about the movie is a treat for fans of the series. I really wish it was longer than it was! Seriously, I can imagine the moments where there will be gasps in the audience and the yells of Plus Ultra! This may be the inner fanboy in me, but My Hero Academia: Two Heroes is the greatest movie I’ve watched this year, possibly ever. I highly Implore any fan of the show to catch the movie if you can.

All in all, go see My Hero Academia: Two Heroes if you can. My god, I was on the edge of my seat at the end and my emotions were toyed with beautifully. I laughed, cried, and felt excitement. Beyond when I saw Digimon the First Movie in theaters as a child, My Hero Academia: Two Heroes made my voice hoarse by the end and I loved every second. If I ever get a chance to hear the subbed version, I’m sure I’ll love it just as much as the dub. Stop reading and go find a theater to watch it!

Lolinia gives My Hero Academia: Two Heroes a Drastik Moé Measure of 9.8 out of 10.0 (98).
