Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan is a 2D Action Adventure RPG game where you take on the role of Prince Enzo on his wedding day, which is also the day of his coronation. But come on, this is a game we are talking about, do you really think it is going to go off without a hitch? Nope! This day is the day that your brother in law arranged a nice little coup d’etat. This is the beginning of your journey.

The story is pretty good and one of the two saving graces of the game, and as such I will not spoil it (I do hate story spoilers). The art is the other saving grace. The art style is quite beautiful with lots of color, not a pow right in your eye color, but more of a soft graceful color. The special move fx are pretty nice. Unfortunately that is where the positives for this game really stop. There are not enough character animations, so when moving and fighting it all looks awkward and gives the game the feel of being a mobile port.

The gameplay is set as a beat ’em up with flashy moves but the controls are clumsy which made playing it less than fun. The audio is not bad but it is really nothing special, from music to combat to sound fx it all just seems mediocre.

Let me get into my experience of the game. I started up the game and it loads up, I was super stoked as I have been waiting to get my hands on it. I choose english as the language and the game crashes. I re-launch the game and let it stay in french, I get to the title menu, go into options and change the language there and then back out to the title again. It’s still in french. So I restart the game and finally it is in english.

Time to actually start playing the GAME! The intro kicks in and I am very pleased with what I am seeing, beautiful color and art. First up find such and such person to talk to. Upon reading the convo bubbles I think to myself that it’s a shame that there’s no voice acting. I put that thought aside and start moving only to find that the running and walking animations look awkward, but so long as the combat is good it will be fine.

So I jog here and there completing the first set of story requests and am then treated to a bit more story, then finally, COMBAT! I tend to hate tutorials, but they are sometimes necessary, however this tutorial is a boring as I suspected it would be. The combat feels really off, the controls are bad, and it looks silly. I continue forward through the game and the more I play the more aggravated I got. I just can not understand how this could be considered ready to be released. I spent many more hours forcing myself through the game and I felt every minute of it. This was not enjoyable to play or to write about.

I had a lot of hope for Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan, and upon playing the game was very quickly let down. While I enjoyed the story, and a fair amount of the art is really well done, the majority of the game was a failure. So much promise squandered by what seems to be a rush to finish it. I do not suggest getting the game as it is, outside of finding it at under $5.

Pros:
Most of the art is good
The story is decently written

Cons:
Combat just feels off and the controls are not tight enough
Not enough character animations
Audio is all around mediocre
Controls are not good

LumpDizzle666 gives Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan a Drastik Measure 4 out of 10 (40)
