Battlefleet Gothic: Armada is a space sci-fi real time strategy (RTS) game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Warhammer 40k is a dark sci-fi/fantasy universe that started out as a tabletop rpg, but thankfully has flourished into many video games.

The game takes place in the Gothic sector of the empire, and after a short opening battle you become Admiral of a battle fleet. A fine opening premise, in my opinion, because who doesn’t want to command their own fleet of space ships.

The story is as a Warhammer 40k game should be. It is dark and gritty with a mystery hanging over your head. And to avoid all spoilers this is all you get about the story: play it and let it unfold its secrets for you.

The game uses a pretty standard RTS keyboard control, but I found it a bit off at times. I personally prefer WASD for camera movement, and while the game lets you remap keys, I found that it did not seem to work properly when I tried remapping the camera to the WASD keys.

There are two game modes you will be able to play. The first is the campaign. This is where you will play through the story, and it is a good one. There is also the skirmish mode where you will play on randomly generated maps with your choice of either AI or other players. The skirmish mode offers a lot of replayability as you can choose your faction, and as you play you get to upgrade your ships and increase the size of your fleet.

In skirmish play, you can choose from four different factions. Imperium, Chaos, Orks and Eldar each with their own ship designs really setting them apart for each other.
The battles take place in small maps where your fleet is pitted against an opposing one. You will come across asteroids, minefields, and other non-enemy dangers on the battle maps.

I LOVE the art in this game! From the ships, to the character portraits, to the cut scenes. It all feels so very Warhammer 40k and that makes me a very happy geek, dark and gritty all around and just so good. The battle animations fit in so well. From the ship cannon, to the special abilities, they feel very visceral and fun.
The music is is good, but not great, though it does fit the 40k universe. The sound FX are really well done, and I look forward to hearing the sounds of the ship cannons firing and the special attacks going off. The voice acting is probably among my favorite things audio wise. What can I say other than it is really good and I love it!
