Without within is a core visual novel, a back to basics game, with simple art, music, and a decent story. It follows the life of Vinty, a calligrapher. It is a free to play indie visual novel that the creators and publisher InvertMouse put best into words. “I realized that just how small the development group was. The team probably knew they stood no chance against the bigger studios. Yet, they still did their best with dated technologies to deliver a vision they believed in.”
It has okay humor for such a short visual novel, however it is fun to re-read at times or use to get deeper into the sequel by learning more about the character. It pokes fun at itself down the road with “No wonder it was so cheap. Art by InvertMouse, whoever the heck that was.” While it may pass over many heads, I had a great chuckle when I read it, and was reminded of the price of this game. Hint: free on steam, pick it up and play it!
While the story, art and music are nothing spectacular, it does have an indie vibe that makes it feel fun and is a nice read. Vinty is a character with a dream where you make the choices, while you are not making or breaking her life with your choices… well maybe you are. They follow her dream, however, and like a ripple in a pond, they spread out and affect the larger picture as you play the game. It is a nicely put together game that is between 10 to 30 minutes depending on your reading speed.
There are flashbacks or dreams that show what the developers are actually able to do with time. They may be small, but that is not limiting their potential and once more you can feel what they say in-game, and what their thoughts are. “The happiness they felt when working on the project poured out of every line in this game. I could gaze right into their hearts.”
All in all it is a good game that you should try and read, it is a short but decent story where you will get to know Vinty more for the sequel which has been released as of writing this.
