Cross of the Dutchman is an action adventure game, It takes place in 16th century Western Europe. You take on the role of Pier Gerlofs Donia. “The story being based on the true story of his folk legend”. The story is really good. Pier is a very likeable character and he has a BEARD! As a bearded fellow myself I love it. The Saxons are invading and the are not nice.. In fact they are big dicks.

Pier being the awesome person he was could not just sit by and watch as the Dic… i mean Saxons oppress the good people of his province and ends up gathering a group of farmers the fight against the Saxons. These actions by Pier led legend he is known for, the Cross of the Dutchman.

The gameplay is simple yet satisfying. You have to attacks, Basic and special (heavy). The basic attack is fast and has a several hit combo while the special is an area attack and does much more damage. You have a stamina bar that your special attack uses but it regenerates at a good pace so you will not be long without it. The combat is not perfect though as there is a very slight pause after you finish your combo leaving you open to be attacked. this leads to taking a fair amount of damage but your health will regenerate after not getting hit for a few seconds (you need it) You can slightly change the direction of your basic attack combo but not enough for my liking as this also leaves you open for taking damage.

The Graphics are mostly good and I personally love the art style. There are times when you can see the squareness of the tiles that build the maps and it is a bit off putting but bearable. The character are a bit squarish as well but in a very charming way. and the hand drawn are that conversions and cut scenes use is really very nice.

The Sound is as good as everything else in the game. The music there and is as charming as the art. The ambient sound never get annoying and there. My one problem with the game is that there is no voice acting… And while not necessary I really feel it could have been a huge boon.

The controls are very good whether you choose mouse or controller.

Pros:
The story is fantastic
The art is good
The combat is satisfying
The controls are good

Cons:
The square tiles of the environment can be a bit off putting
The delay after combos leaves you open for damage
The limit/slowness in combo direction change leaves you open for damage

All said and done Cross of the Dutchman is a great game with satisfying game play and a fantastic story. If any of that sounds good to you get the game play the game and love the game
