CLANNAD Anime Dub Blu-ray review

Studio: Kyoto Animation
Publisher: Sentai Filmworks
Distributor: Section23
Release Date: December 5th, 2017

Are you emotionally constipated? Need less gore in your anime? Or less sports, but still has sports in it? Don’t mind eyes that are as far apart as America is from China? Well, get ready for laughs, crying, and painful ripping out of emotions from your soul. Based on the critically-acclaimed visual novel, CLANNAD is available on blu-ray (with a pretty damn nice English dub) in the US thanks to Sentai Filmworks. Bawl your eyes out with the complete collection of it like I did. Many thanks to Section23 for the review unit.

Tomoya Okazaki hates living in his town. The death of his mom made his dad a lazy-ass bum and turned his life into something he dislikes. Nagisa Furukawa has always been a shy and sickly child and even missed enough classes the previous year that she needed to repeat it. She currently has no friends in the school. These two meet on the road to school one day and a story that transcends emotional borders begins. Revive drama clubs, get almost run over by scooters, and get diarrhea of the tear ducts in CLANNAD.

Personally, I loved watching CLANNAD. I’ve seen it in Japanese a few times before and, of course, I’ve played the visual novel. Seeing the VN animated and given a moderately good interpretation is refreshing. The English dub is amazing, in my opinion. The voice actors really seemed to have put their all into getting the main character personalities well. Greg Ayres as Sunohara also happens to be my favorite part of the dub. For some reason, he really fits as the geeky side characters. I’ve loved him as Zenji (Food Wars), Makoto (Chunibyo), and Touya (Log Horizon). However, all the other actors are just as good.

The music in CLANNAD is easy to listen and helps shape the world well. The animation and storytelling is just as easy-going. Characters are well-rounded and easy to believe, even if their Feats of Strength may not. I wish that I could say more, but I’d spoil a lot of the story and that’s not what you’re reading this review for, now, ain’t it? With a retail value of $149.98 USD on the Sentai Filmworks store (currently priced at $97.99 USD), I highly recommend CLANNAD this holiday season. Follow the lives of these characters and laugh, cry, and feel all sorts of emotions alongside them. It’s completely worth the ride.

Lolinia gives CLANNAD a Drastik  Measure of 9.0 out of 10.0 (90).

PS. Kotomi still Best Girl.
