Studio: BONES
Publisher: Sentai Filmworks
Distributor: Section23 Films
Release Date: December 12th, 2017

Alright, reviewer. Your readers are tired of simple slice-of-life shows. Enough with the LARPing antics and squid puns. No more trying to make being cool the next new thing in anime. Let’s get some blood and action! A show that pumps you up with story, but doesn’t forget that necessary gore… and let’s add a coffin! Published in the USA by Sentai Filmworks, Chaika the Coffin Princess Complete Collection has action, blood, drama, and magic! Many thanks to Section23 for the review unit.

This isn’t what you think. There are no pervs in Ba Sing Se.

Chaika the Coffin Princess is the story of a land in the midst of peace. For 500 long years, Emperor Gaz ruled the Gaz Empire with a terribly evil iron fist. Five years before the start of the show, he was defeated by eight brave heroes and his body was torn apart and scattered across the other countries. Now, his daughter, Chaika Gaz, is attempting to bring his remains together again. However, Chaika is a mysterious girl who speaks in broken Japanese… and gets lost easily. She meets a jobless warrior named Toru Acura (beep beep!) while lost in a forest and the anime’s story begins there and this synopsis ends here.

Magic sniper rifles!~

I have to say that Chaika the Coffin Princess is captivating from the first episode onward. From the start, Chaika is an adorable character and makes you want to hug her with her broken Japanese (and is just as wonderfully broken in the English dub). The OP lets you know that there is going to be a ton of action and each episode doesn’t let you down. There’s action, drama, and a cute girl. The worldbuilding and storytelling are added bonuses.

Brocon much?

With a retail value of $99.98 USD (at time of writing: $64.99 USD) for the blu-ray version, Chaika the Coffin Princess is a nice addition to a growing anime collection. Twenty-two episodes, an OVA, and a whole lot of tearing into human flesh, I quite thoroughly enjoyed Chaika. Admittedly, I preferred listening to the show in Japanese since Chaika’s broken language skills sound much cuter than in English, but the dub is completely viable to show others who won’t watch it otherwise. You can get it from the Sentail Filmworks store here or from your favorite retailer. Watch a cute, coffin-carrying character kill creatures of varying capacities, today!

Lolinia gives Chaika the Coffin Princess a Drastik Moé Measure of 7.8 out of 10.0 (78).
