Aveyond 4: Shadow of the Mist comes from the Aveyond series setting in the same universe as the previous games but instead of taking the role of heroes stopping a great evil, things are a tad switched over. Instead of the role of a group of heroes, you take on the role of Boyle Wolfbane, a villain who was defeated by a group of heroes only to find himself 3 years later in a remote village on the outskirts filled with nothing but failed villains and monsters. During a celebration though, a pattern of circumstances lead him on a journey with a few other rag tag creatures and villains on a journey that is full of changes for our villains-gone-hero.

Aveyond 4 follows the same format of play style as the previous games keeping with the old school RPG style. For those who haven’t played the previous game, which is not a requirement for this game, the encounters for combat in this game are not randomized. All enemies are visible on the screen during movement. There are some that will approach you if you get close enough, but it is possible to avoid some encounters. In combat, each character has their own main attack abilities, special skills/spells, and the ability to use items in combat very similar to most other RPG games. Though graphically, it’s a very basic pixelated RPG, but the story does help look past a lot of that.

The story, although nothing in depth, is charming and funny with enough entertainment to keep you playing the game. It’s definitely one that plays on the fact that you’re the bad guys getting recognized for good deeds along the way without it being the intentions of our protagonists. The pacing is comfortable to keep up with, never drawing out certain areas or plot yet giving enough meat to the game to keep interest. The characters also feel fleshed out and almost never take themselves seriously leading to some wonderfully witty and funny conversations.

The technical aspects of the game do have a few parts that can improve. When going through areas such as forests or caves, there isn’t background music playing so you only have environmental sounds or the sounds of your character walking around. The controls are also quite sensitive and I haven’t found a way to alter it to help when going around the map. There are also a few issues where chat boxes won’t pop up so you lose some conversations or you can get stuck on certain parts of the map and if you haven’t saved previously before the glitch, you have to start from a previous autosave and work back up to the point.

All in all, it’s a wonderful RPG that takes on a different view point in the story and characters while having some fun. Aside from a few technical issues, I would definitely recommend paying the $14.99 USD on Steam to get your hands on it.

Bijouxdemon gives Aveyond 4 a Drastik Measure 7.4 out of 10.0 (74).
