Digimon is a franchise that has spawned a number games, television series, and movies. While its general popularity is often overshadowed by Pokemon, there is a lot to love about the little digital monsters that change form into stronger (and cooler) forms. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is the latest game in the series, released for the PS4 and Playstation Vita back in March of last year. It is developed by Media Vision and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The main plot of the game is very deep and intricate, and involves a new digital world called EDEN. In that world, Digimon are considered programs that are used by hackers. Through circumstance or fate your character ends up being given the ability to use Digimon as well.

You are given a choice between 3 Digimon and are given a basic tutorial on the game. As the story unfolds however, your character runs across a nasty digital creature that makes you become part digital. This gives you access to interesting in-game abilities. Yadda yadda with some more story and POW, you become a Cyber Sleuth.

The game is your average turn-based JRPG starring your digital companions as the ones who will battle in your stead. Core components involve battling through different areas, solving mysteries, and raising your Digimon.

While you start with only one Digimon at the beginning of the game, you’ll be able to add more monsters to your team by battling.

Digimon will gain experience after each battle. Once they reach certain prerequisites, the Digimon can ‘digivolve’. Digivolving in itself is a complex process, but allows your monster buddy to change into a number of different and more powerful forms. These digivolutions are necessary in order to take on stronger enemies and complete the game.

The best part is that there are so many forms to get that even after playing for 100 hours, I still haven’t gotten them all. This leads to a ton of fun just trying to complete the collection.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth isn’t without its flaws, however:

Many times throughout the story, I found myself lost and not sure what to do. This lead me to go through various areas and blindly trying to figure it out for myself. The game is pretty small and feels that way. While there are multiple areas, all of them aren’t that big. This might make sense for a Playstation Vita-only game, but for all the specs of the PS4, it just feels awkward. Each Digimon has a special move that is unique to only that Digimon. This is accompanied with a special animation. Unfortunately, it doesn’t feel special and is even somewhat underwhelming. More time and effort should have been given to these special moves.

I am a HUGE fan of Digimon, so I’m happy to say that Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is a solid game that is lots of fun. While there are some flaws and shortcomings, they should not deter you from checking it out. Just be warned- it’s a major time sink!

LUMPdizzle666 gives Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth a Drastik Measure 8.0 out of 10.0 (80).
